Older Persons and Online Communities: Motives, Incentives, and Barriers
In this study, the barriers, needs, preferences, benefits and motivating factors of the target group (60plus) were investigated in order to identify promising approaches for the development of technical and non-technical solutions.
The study consisted of two central elements:
- a review of the literature on motivations of older persons to participate in online communities, on the potential benefits of that participation and on how older non-users of online communities can be reached, activated and integrated into online communities
- a combination of usability tests and semi-structured interviews with 18 participants with the purpose of identifying how online communities can be of use for the social integration of persons aged 60 to 75
